Earlier this summer, when Dr. Rick Lozano, president of P&C Labs, and I were talking about the newest innovation in pathology software, which uses artificial intelligence to enhance pathologic images, I didn’t know that AI would become one of the most discussed topics in the nation or in the world, not just in healthcare. But that’s where we are.
This issue’s cover story, starting on page 8, explores the expanding role of AI in pathology and shows the difference it can make for the reviewing pathologist. I’m interested in hearing from other Kentucky physicians about their use of artificial intelligence in their medical practice.
Cancer care and treatment in Kentucky are the topics in this issue. We cover a wide array: medical oncology, interventional bronchoscopy, radiation oncology, ortho-oncology, gastrointestinal oncology, and cancer screening for both men and women.
Raising Money and Awareness
We had fun at the Greater Louisville Medical Society’s Doctor’s Cup Golf tournament and the CommonSpirit Yes, Mamm! Yes, Cerv! 5K. UofL Health went to the KY State Fair and UofL women’s basketball head coach Jeff Walz talked about the mental health of today’s student athlete and what his program is doing about it.

Martin J. Luftman, MD

We mourn the passing of a great doctor and a friend, Dr. Marty Luftman, the consummate plastic surgeon, husband, father, grandfather, and story-teller. Among his many accomplishments, he was chief of surgery at Central Baptist Hospital, president of both the Kentucky Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Lexington Plastic Surgery Journal, and reconstructive surgeon for thousands of grateful patients.
It was my pleasure to interview Dr. Luftman for the MD-Update cover story in June 2010. After his retirement, I occasionally would see him at the Euclid Avenue Kroger in Lexington where we would chat about fruits, vegetables, and how his kids and wife Ginny were doing, which were his favorite topics.
If there’s story-telling in the next life, I’m sure Marty Luftman, MD, will have a seat at the table.
Planning for 2027 is Underway
The editorial calendar for MD-Update in 2027 is on the inside back cover. We’re already planning next year’s stories. When you see your specialty and it piques your interest, give me a call or send me an email. I’m sure you have a story to tell, or an update on your medical practice and specialty.
Until next issue, all the best,
Gil Dunn
