Improved Sexual Activity After Bariatric Surgery

“Most patients experience improved quality in their sexual activity and libido after bariatric surgery.

A JAMA Surgery study published in 2019 found that patients had improved sexual desire, increased frequency of sexual activity and increased satisfaction with their sex lives five years after surgery. Steffen K, et al. Changes in Sexual Functioning in Women and Men in the 5 Years After Bariatric Surgery. JAMA Surg. 2019; DOI: 10.1001/jamasurg.2018.1162.

These improvements can be attributed to a multitude of reasons, including improved self-esteem, increased positive body image, decreased depressive episodes and symptoms, and hormonal changes that increase libido and fertility. For men, erectile dysfunction may improve as well due to hormonal changes that happen with weight loss. Many obese men have low testosterone, which can improve with weight loss.”
