Lexington Medical Society Installs 2020 President
LEXINGTON Mamata Majmundar, MD, a Lexington family medicine physician, was installed as president of the Lexington Medical Society on January 14, 2020 during the LMS’s Dinner Meeting held at the Hilary J. Boone Center, University of Kentucky. Charles Papp, MD, a Lexington colon and rectal surgeon, was recognized for his outstanding leadership as the LMS president in 2019. Among his accomplishments was starting a regular public-health-focused symposium consisting of panel experts from across Lexington’s healthcare systems. The inaugural event, the LMS Opioid Symposium, was held in October 2019, working in conjunction with Lexington mayor Linda Gorton’s office. Papp assembled a panel of experts on the front lines of the opioid crisis in Lexington to provide physicians and community leaders the background and scope of the opioid crisis in Lexington. Papp will now chair the LMS Executive Board for this next year.
Majmundar is a second-generation Kentuckian whose parents immigrated from India. Her physician parents chose to settle in Eastern Kentucky, given the critical need for physicians in that area, because they thought they could make the most impactful difference. This sparked her interests in medicine at an early age and played a strong role in her desire to be a family physician and find ways to serve her community. She is a graduate of Transylvania University and the University of Louisville School of Medicine, and completed her residency in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at UK. She is currently serving on the Lexington-Fayette County Board of Health and Transylvania Board of Regents, and in elected positions at the KMA and AMA.
Majmundar, who recently led the development of the LMS three-year strategic plan, articulated the new LMS vision, “Building a community of physicians in Central Kentucky is about building relationships that transcends where you work, where we can work toward a higher purpose and common causes.”
The 2020 LMS leadership includes Khalil Rahman, MD, vice president, and Angelia Thompson, MD, as the secretary-treasurer. James Borders, MD, is the president-elect and Lee Dossett, MD, is the vice president-elect. The Lexington Medical Society is a non-profit

Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation Gala Raises Funds for Level II Neonatal ICU
LONDON The Saint Joseph London Foundation’s 11th annual Gala for Hope on February 1, 2020, raised $120,000 in support of a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Saint Joseph London.
“Many babies who are in need of intensive care services often have to be transferred to Lexington,” said Leslie Smart, CFRE, president, CHI Saint Joseph London Foundation. “Through the NICU addition at Saint Joseph London, we hope to be able to alleviate families of any excess financial and emotional burdens associated with traveling a far distance to receive care.”
Arif Khan, MD, was awarded Physician of the Year at the event. Mark Roark, APRN, CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Orthopedics, was awarded the Advanced Practice Clinician of the Year.
